The YMCA of Greater San Francisco was established during the Gold Rush in 1853. Its mission is to empower each person’s journey and strengthen the foundations of community. It is a 501(c)3 charitable community organization, and its staff and volunteers serve more than 130,000 people through 15 neighborhood branches, more than 130 program sites, and one residential camp across Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. One testimonial describes the Y as a welcoming place for the community and notes that staff hear many stories about the role the Y has played in the lives of people they meet at work and in the community.
