Founded in 1976, SCRAP Art Education Programs is part of Friends of SCRAP Inc., a nonprofit organization working at the intersection of art, education, and the environment. The program was founded by arts community leader Anne Marie Theilen and celebrated artist and arts education champion Ruth Asawa. SCRAP’s Depot and Art Education programs serve 45,000 people each year and reach more than 1,000 K–12 students in San Francisco public schools through art education programs. SCRAP was founded to meet the needs of teaching artists while diverting waste, creating a place where surplus materials could be repurposed for creative use. SCRAP is described as part of Ruth Asawa’s lasting legacy and as a gift to the city of San Francisco rooted in art education, creative reuse, and community building. SCRAP is described as a creative reuse haven and community space filled with ever-changing, affordable materials for teachers, artists, students, and makers, and it keeps hundreds of tons of reusable materials out of landfills. The organization diverts over 250 tons of materials from the waste stream each year through more than 5,000 material donations and transforms high-value material donations into funding for operations. SCRAP also partners with Bayview’s Cafe Alma to host a workshop series and maintains an eBay store for vintage and collectibles with options for local pickup and U.S. shipping.
