About

San Francisco Arts Education Project Programs give children chances to paint, dance, act, sing, weave, sculpt, draw, drum, stitch, and make collage. The programs include visual arts, drama, musical theater, world rhythms, choral expression, painting, drawing, singing, sculpture, and fashion design. Weekend workshops are offered in disciplines such as collage and fashion design, and summer camps are described as legendary and often selling out far in advance.

• Ages: 6–14 years old

The San Francisco Arts Education Project was founded in 1968 and has offered more than 300,000 public school students a chance to participate in arts activities since then. Its mission is to enrich the lives of children by facilitating hands-on participation in the visual and performing arts taught by practicing artists. SFArtsED supports artist residencies in visual arts, dance, drama, musical theater, world rhythms, and choral expression at some twenty public schools and after-school programs. Nearly twenty percent of campers receive scholarship assistance. The SFArtsED Players musical theater troupe is a rigorous after-school and weekend training program for serious young performers ages 9–14 that culminates in a fully realized production every spring at the Presidio Theatre. Artists, singers, and dancers at the high school and college levels take part in internships and mentor opportunities at summer camps and in school programs. SFArtsED has an office and adjacent gallery and classroom space where workshops are held and student work is exhibited, and it is described as the sole non-profit surrounded by some of the most esteemed contemporary art galleries in San Francisco. One parent, Joel Selvin, describes SFArtsED as giving children “not only a vastly increased sense of self esteem but also first-hand experience with success—something you cannot get enough of in this life.” The leadership team includes Executive Director Chad S. Jones, Artistic Director Emily Keeler, Program Director Mia Waller, Administrative Coordinator Tiersa Nureyev, Administrative Assistant & Summer Registrar Kathryn Aarons, Accounts & Business Manager Laura Bloch, Curator & Digital Media Producer Pete Belkin, and Glen Park After School Site Coordinator Susan Tramontana.
