Sharon Art Studio Youth Art Classes offer hands-on activities in ceramics, jewelry, glass, fine arts, stained glass, mixed media, and jewelry and metal arts. The program also includes summer youth art intensives that focus on these areas.
• Ages: 11–17 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday 9:30am–10:00pm and Saturdays 9:30am–5:00pm when classes are in session
Sharon Art Studio was established by the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department in 1968. It is described as San Francisco’s largest public art studio and largest public community center for the arts, offering over 300 classes each year for adults and youth. The Sharon Art Studio operates in partnership with the nonprofit Friends of Sharon Art Studio, which has partnered with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department for over 30 years to run the programs. Friends of Sharon Art Studio raises funds to sustain classes, care for and upgrade studios, support teaching artists, and expand programs. The studio has approximately 45 teachers in ceramics, jewelry, stained glass, fine arts, mixed media, and summer youth art intensives.
The mission of Sharon Art Studio states that art education is considered an essential component of a healthy community, with a vision of an affordable, high-quality, non-competitive learning environment focused on self-expression through fine arts, jewelry and metal arts, glass, and ceramics. Annual events at the studio include a Spring Open House, Summer Student Showcases, an Artist in Residence Salon, and Halloween events. The leadership team includes Zach Canter (Recreation Supervisor, Cultural Arts, SFRPD), Nicki Guard (Executive Director, Friends of Sharon Art Studio), Cassandra Sechler (Program Manager, Friends of Sharon Art Studio), Robin Silver (Facility Assistant, SFRPD), Marla Blanchard (Front Desk Queen, SFRPD), and Nick Bross (Facility Coordinator, SFRPD). Members receive registration one week prior to the general public and a $25 discount on every class.
