About
Support for Families of Children with Disabilities Programs offers affirming, parent-led support for families of children with disabilities in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. The program includes inclusive seasonal and special events for the community, as well as parent-to-parent family support that provides education, resources, and training for families with children 0–36 months who are at risk of or experiencing delays or disabilities. The program is organized through family-led centers with first-hand experience of the challenges faced by families of children with complex medical needs and operates as flexible, culturally sensitive hubs of support and resources with targeted services based on the needs and interests of families in San Francisco.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Drop-in hours available Monday–Thursday, with additional office hours Monday–Friday
For over 40 years, Support for Families of Children with Disabilities (SFCD) has empowered families with the knowledge and tools to ensure their child receives the care they need at school, at home, and within the community. Its mission is to ensure that families of children with disabilities, learning differences, and/or complex medical needs, and the providers who serve them, have the knowledge and support to make informed choices that enhance children’s development and well-being. The organization is part of the NCC4 PTI Consortium with Parents Helping Parents, DREDF, and Matrix to serve the whole Bay Area. It holds multiple designations, including Community Parent Resource Center (CPRC), Parent Training and Information Center (PTI), Family Empowerment Center on Disability (FEC), Early Start Family Resource Center (ESFRC), Family-to-Family Health Information Center (F2F), and San Francisco Population-Based Family Resource Center for Special Needs.
Parents describe Support for Families as a bridge between their world and the world they have to function in. One parent reports that the organization has literally been a lifesaver for parents and their children, and another thanks the program for all the great programs provided for people with special needs. A parent also shares that they were on the verge of giving up finding help for themselves and their child and expresses gratitude for their Support for Families Care Coordinator.
