National Junior Basketball (NJB), the parent organization, is a nonprofit youth basketball organization founded in 1984 that has grown into a national youth league with over 25,000 participants in 6 states. Silicon Valley NJB is a section of the Northern California region of National Junior Basketball and is described as “THE YOUTH BASKETBALL HUB FOR THE BAY AREA,” with the slogan “Where Basketball is Fun-Tastic!” The Silicon Valley Section is a member of the NorCal NJB Region, consists of 14 chapters with over 5,000 players, and is the parent organization to 12+ NJB chapters across the Bay Area during the winter. In the Northern California NJB Region, there are about 8,500 boys and girls playing NJB basketball, and Silicon Valley chapters include Almaden Valley, Berryessa/Milpitas, Coyote Creek/South San Jose, Evergreen/San Jose, Foothill, Gilroy/Morgan Hill, Hollister, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Redwood (Menlo Park/Woodside), Saratoga, Sequoia (Redwood City/San Carlos), West San Jose, and Willow Glen.
The NJB mission statement is to inspire youth regardless of race, creed, or national origin; to practice the ideals of health, citizenship, and character; to implant the game elements of safety, sanity, and intelligent supervision; to keep the welfare of the player first, foremost, and entirely free of adult quest for glory; and to emphasize teamwork for all participants. NJB promotes sportsmanship and teamwork concepts during the season, enforces a draft system throughout the entire program to ensure that each team is equal in talent and size, and states that the Griffin method shall be implemented. The Code of Ethics emphasizes sportsmanship, respect for referees, positive adult behavior, and playing for the love of the game.
Leadership connected to the program includes Dennis Murphy Jr., Founder of the National Junior Basketball League; Dennis Murphy Sr., one of the founders of the American Basketball Association (ABA) that merged with the NBA; and Mel Robertson, who was inducted into the NJB Hall of Fame in 2012 for over 22 years of service.
