About

Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley Programs are offered by a non-profit youth development organization that provides afterschool and summer enrichment programs. The clubs offer age-appropriate and diverse programs provided by trained youth development staff and use a proven youth development strategy called Formula for Impact. The programs include nationally recognized options in six core areas that are tailored to members’ physical, emotional, cultural, and social needs and interests, with specific teen programming for grades 8–12.

• Ages: 4–18 years old

Founded in 1944 with the purpose of giving local kids a safe place to go, Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley focuses on character development and civic leadership. The organization states that child safety is its No. 1 priority. It serves over 8,000 youth as regular members at dozens of club locations across four Bay Area counties, primarily low-income, at-risk Santa Clara County youth ages 4–18+ years, including youth in Title 1 schools who are not meeting academic proficiencies. Its mission is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need it most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring adults, and it aims to help close the opportunity gap for youth and their communities through a holistic approach to creating well-rounded, confident, and healthy youth.

Parents and youth describe the clubs as places where staff are caring and considerate of others’ feelings and where staff take good care of kids and communicate well with them. One parent reports that the program has been “a huge benefit” because their child gets food, help with homework, and time to play with peers every day, and another calls it “an absolute lifesaver.” Youth and alumni testimonials describe learning values such as honesty, responsibility, compassion, and community, and share that the Club has been a safe haven, a place that supported a love of learning, and a place that encouraged leadership and mentoring of other kids.
