About

Coach Ken Soccer offers youth soccer programs that include a recreational soccer program, technical and tactical soccer skills training, and small-sided matches. Players work on ball skills such as speed dribbling, step-overs, passing, and shooting, along with agility training that includes forward, sideways, backward, and jumping movements. Sessions include 1v1 play, 3v3 and 4v4 matches, Rec League team soccer with goalie, defender, and attacker positions, as well as indoor soccer, afterschool classes, and camps during holiday breaks.

• Ages: 4–13 years old

Coach Ken Soccer’s recreational soccer program teaches both technical and tactical skills using a curriculum that is described as progressive and ever-evolving and uses a wide variety of fun exercises to teach new skills. The program focuses on ball and body control, including receiving, controlling, passing, shooting, and defending, with a special focus on dribbling fast, changing direction, and using advanced moves and fakes. There is an emphasis on decision-making and teamwork through soccer tactics, and the program is personalized and individualized to each kid, with players divided into groups by age and ability.

Class structure typically includes 25–30 minutes of ball skills, 5–10 minutes of agility, about 10 minutes of 1v1 play, and 10–15 minutes of 3v3 or 4v4 matches. For players under 6 years old, there are no goalies except on shooting lesson days. The Rec League introduces kids to team soccer with consistent teams, teammates, rules, and ref-coaches, and Rec League matches are small-sided (4v4 or 5v5) with players rotating positions. Players receive uniforms around week 3–4 once teams are established.

Camps are offered during holiday breaks and keep players involved in soccer with age-appropriate skills. The program runs afterschool classes and participates in Palo Alto YDP, Palo Alto Afterschool Programs, and City of Los Altos classes and camps. Registration for some programs is through ActivityHero, BYGA, or the City of Los Altos, and registration for Summer Camps is stated as open.

Coach Ken leads the program and is recognized for both his teaching ability and the joy he brings to the youth soccer experience. Coaches are trained to correctly teach soccer skills to different age groups and are experienced at quickly identifying each player’s strengths and weaknesses. The program’s four core values are Consistency, Knowledge, Skills, and Advancement, and its mission statement is that people love what they are good at, and good training is ultimately more important than raw talent.

Thousands of young players and their families have participated in Coach Ken’s youth soccer programs in the Bay Area. The program lists partnerships or references with United Soccer Coaches, Los Altos Recreation, PASC, Activity Hero, US Soccer, and FIFA. There is a no tolerance policy for physical violence, verbal abuse, and spitting directed toward other players and coaches. For rain-outs, parents are emailed at least one hour before class, and make-ups are handled by adding one more week at the same time and place until all sessions are complete.
