Heroes Martial Arts Youth Classes is led by Alan “Gumby” Marques, a 4th Degree Black Belt who received his black belt in 2006 from Ralph Gracie. The leadership team includes Alan “Gumby” Marques (Founder, Head Instructor, president of the San Jose Downtown Association), Nick “Eastside” Borbon (head instructor, Eastside San Jose location), Trevor Ireland (main instructor, downtown Heroes location), Rich Jackson (founder of Samurai Jiu Jitsu), and Kevin Kopecky (head instructor, Campbell location). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Heroes Martial Arts was established in 2009, with Heroes Martial Arts opening in 2009, Samurai Jiu Jitsu opening in 2015, Heroes Martial Arts Eastside opening in 2020, and Samurai Jiu Jitsu and Heroes Martial Arts officially merging in 2023. The program’s culture is described as being based on simplicity and respect, with rules based on common sense and common courtesy, and it is described as avoiding many of the trappings of traditional martial art dojos. Membership includes access to all three locations mentioned in the facts. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in this program is described as the fastest growing and most effective martial art in the world.

Gumby is currently the president of the San Jose Downtown Association (SJDA) and is described as fighting hard to represent other small businesses who have been impacted in the last few years. Heroes Martial Arts has worked with the community and provided self defense workshops.

Parent and student reviews describe the instructors as top-notch, professional, down to earth, casual, and friendly, and describe the overall culture of the classes as friendly, welcoming, and a chill and calm atmosphere for both seasoned practitioners and complete beginners. Reviews also describe Heroes Martial Arts as a place to work hard, grow, and learn, and as a school that values people’s experiences and wants everyone to grow and learn at a healthy and reasonable pace.
