About
Japanese Art & Cultural Center offers traditional Japanese martial arts such as Aikido, Bo-jutsu, Iaido, Karate, Kendo, Kyudo, and Judo, including children’s classes in karate and kendo. The program also offers Japanese and English (ESL) classes, Japanese translation, children’s drawing and calligraphy, anime/manga drawing, soroban (abacus), kids’ dance, zazen (sitting meditation), Zen meditation, yoga, Pilates, Qigong, calligraphy, ikebana (flower arrangement), nihonga (ink painting), Western painting, crafts, and shakuhachi. Many classes offer free trial lessons.

• Schedule: Japanese language group classes meet on Fridays, with Level 1 (Beginner) from 5:30–6:30pm and Level 2 (Pre-intermediate) from 6:45–7:45pm.
• Price: Martial art class fee options include Single Class Drop-in $40, Once-a-Week Pass $120 for 4 classes, 10-Class Pass $350 for 10 classes, Unlimited Monthly Pass $200, and Unlimited Family Monthly Pass $300 for 2 family members or $350 for 3 or more family members. Japanese language group classes cost $35 per session.
Japanese Art & Cultural Center was established in 2010 in San Jose, California, as a non-profit organization dedicated to traditional Japanese martial arts, fine arts, language, and exercises. The organization states a mission to promote calm, peaceful minds and ways of thinking, and to enhance individual integrity, compassionate character, profound awareness, and self-actualization promoting personal, physical and psychological growth and development of each individual, empowering them to live a happier and fuller life, with the belief that such individuals will contribute to advance a civil, prosperous, and peaceful society. It is volunteer-operated, offers a family-friendly environment, and uses the Wellnessliving web portal for class registration, where parents register themselves and then add their child as a family member. The center provides both group classes and private Japanese tutoring, children’s classes in karate, kendo, Japanese, and English (ESL), and hosts cultural events such as a Summer Festival with BBQ, a Japanese Curry Cook-off, and a Halloween party, and it has a Japanese Rock Garden.
Japanese Art & Cultural Center is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations and charitable contributions are tax-deductible. The organization welcomes volunteers and notes that email is the best way to contact volunteer staff members. It has expressed thanks to friends and neighbors who assisted people in the Tohoku region of Japan affected by the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami that happened on May 11, 2011. The Japanese language group classes are taught by Chinatsu Kuroiwa. Cleaning up the dojo after practice is included as part of activities.
