About
Japanese Art & Cultural Center offers traditional Japanese martial arts such as Aikido, Bo-jutsu, Iaido, Karate, Kendo, Kyudo, Judo, and Ki training. The program also includes language classes in Japanese and English (ESL), Japanese translation, and cultural and fine arts activities such as Shodo (brush calligraphy), Japanese ink painting, Western painting, crafts, kids’ drawing, soroban (abacus), anime and manga drawing, kids’ dance, zazen (sitting meditation), flower arrangement, yoga, and Pilates. Participants clean up the dojo after practice as part of the routine.

• Schedule: Fridays with Level 1 (Beginner) from 5:30–6:30pm and Level 2 (Pre-intermediate) from 6:45–7:45pm
• Price: New Japanese Language Group Class is $35 per session; martial art classes offer a $40 single-class drop-in, a $120 once-a-week pass for 4 classes, a $350 10-class pass, a $200 unlimited monthly pass, and an unlimited family monthly pass at $300 for 2 or $350 for 3 or more family members
Japanese Art & Cultural Center was established in 2010 in San Jose, California. The organization is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) non-profit, and donations and charitable contributions are tax-deductible. The center describes itself as a learning place for traditional martial arts and fine arts, offering classes in karate, kendo, iaido, kyudo, aikido, language, and fine arts, and many classes offer free trial lessons. It is a volunteer-operated, family-friendly organization that provides a place to hold classes, courses, and workshops related to Japanese culture and martial arts. The teacher for the new Japanese language group class is Chinatsu Kuroiwa. The center states that it aims to promote calm, peaceful minds and ways of thinking, enhance individual integrity, compassionate character, profound awareness, and self-actualization, and to promote personal, physical, and psychological growth and development of each individual, with the belief that such individuals will contribute to a civil, prosperous, and peaceful society. The center has expressed thanks to friends and neighbors who assisted people in the Tohoku region of Japan affected by the earthquake and tsunami that happened on May 11, 2011.
