Legato Music School was founded by educator Haruna Shiokawa-Mo in May 2009 and has been conducting music lessons in the San Jose and Willow Glen community for 12 years and counting. Legato states that all music instructors have over 10 years of teaching experience and at least a bachelor’s degree in music, and many have experience coaching ensembles or serving as music directors. The school’s mission is to provide high quality performing arts education, engaging with, encouraging, and nurturing all students to achieve their goals. Since 2009, Legato students have been selected as honor students in MTAC, MTNA, ABRSM, RCOM, and Guild Certifications, and have been winners in Youth Focus, MTAC VOCE, CAPMT, MTNA, AFAF, and international Prodigy Competitions, with placements in The California All-State Band, California All-State Choir, United States Open Music Competition, The American Fine Arts Festival International, and The Carnegie Hall Honors Performance.
Legato describes itself as a small school with personalized music lessons where each student has their own personalized curriculum, including annual meetings between teachers, parents, and the Principal with personalized reports. The school holds monthly recitals, annual recitals at larger halls, and faculty and student concerts where students and instructors perform together, with performances in classical, jazz, rock, and pop genres. Ensemble and choir students perform at senior centers and for nonprofit organizations annually, and students form an orchestra, band, choir, or musical theater group to perform with their instructors. Legato offers equipment and piano room rentals for practice, sells books directly to families, provides a 30-minute trial lesson, and holds a student and faculty recital each May.
