Touch 3 Volleyball was founded in 2012 by Smitha Kumar. Smitha brings over four decades of elite competitive volleyball experience, including Varsity and National level play in India and long-term involvement in the San Francisco Bay Area volleyball scene starting in 2000. She has represented California senior teams for nearly two decades, competed for over 15 years at the Huntsman World Senior Games, and played in the World Masters in New Zealand and Taiwan. Smitha was a member of the Gold Medal-winning team at the 2025 National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa. The Touch 3 team represents more than 300 man-years of combined volleyball experience.

Smitha founded Touch 3 Volleyball with a mission to make volleyball accessible, enjoyable, and technically sound for players of all ages, with a focus on maintaining elite fundamental skills at an affordable cost. The program focuses on building technical mastery, competitive confidence, and a lifelong passion for the game. Athletes from middle school through high school use Touch 3 to keep their fundamentals sharp and their court time consistent. Touch 3 has grown from a local initiative into a Bay Area institution primarily through word-of-mouth and community trust. The program reports that 90% of participants successfully make their school and club teams every year.
