About

949 Athletics Volleyball Camps & Clinics offers a Beginner/Intermediate Camp, an Advanced Camp, Positional Training, a Setter Clinic, a Hitting/Blocking Clinic, and a Passing/Defense Clinic. The Beginner/Intermediate Camp covers basic volleyball skills including passing, setting, serving, hitting, and blocking, and includes modified game play and 6v6 games each day with lots of repetitions and constant feedback over the course of four days. The Advanced Camp reinforces advanced techniques in passing, setting, serving, hitting, blocking, and defense using guided 6v6 play and detail-oriented drills run by a decorated staff of coaches, and players are separated by level during camps and clinics to provide the training environment described by the program.

• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Camps, positional trainings, and clinics run 4 days a week; positional trainings and all clinics are 1.5 hours long

The Setter Clinic covers footwork, release, tempo sets, back sets, dumping, and overall concepts of running an offense. The Hitting/Blocking Clinic focuses on arm swing mechanics and footwork, attacking out of system, in transition, out of the back row, how to challenge the block, and teaches blockers eye work and hand placement. The Passing/Defense Clinic focuses on techniques for serve receive, court coverage on defense, and handling a hard-driven attack, and the program encourages players of all positions to attend this clinic. 949 Athletics states that it offers quality coaching that focuses on fundamentals as well as high-level techniques, promotes sportsmanlike behavior inside and outside of the gym, respects and nurtures the balance between athletic and academic excellence, instills the values of integrity, dedication, and hard work, and makes sure athletes have fun.

949 Athletics has a permanent 15,000 square foot volleyball-specific training center with Teraflex floors made by Gerflor, the same official floor used at the London Olympics and in current FIVB volleyball matches, and notes that practices are not cancelled or rescheduled due to the needs of other parties. The club’s philosophy is to teach every athlete the game of volleyball and to train them to reach their potential as an athlete and as a person, and 949 Athletics states that it takes great pride in teaching athletes about life through sport. The program’s mission is to create a respectful environment in which student-athletes receive positive athletic instruction, experience challenging competition, and learn life skills that will help them beyond the volleyball court.

The leadership team includes Justin DeBlasio and Brandon Taliaferro. The program states that its coaches come from a variety of backgrounds rooted in a culture of positive attitudes and hard work, and that 949 Athletics only hires coaches who have demonstrated an ability to connect with student-athletes in life and on the court. Before starting 949, Justin DeBlasio won Junior Olympics twice as a head coach (2009 18 Open and 2005 14 Open) and earned numerous medals in the years in between. In 2009, Justin DeBlasio and Brandon Taliaferro were coaching a team in Anaheim, California, and over the last 10 years 949 Athletics has earned 8 National Championship Junior Olympic Volleyball gold medals.
