Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro Youth Programs offer activities that include sports, recreation, music, dance, art, STEM, games, cooking, theater, leadership-building activities, tech, college and career readiness, hands-on activities, outdoor play, and other enrichment activities. The 5-week Summer Camp is described as being packed with movement, creativity, and fun from morning to afternoon. The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The organization offers programs for youth and teens ages 4–18, including a dedicated Teen Clubhouse for teens ages 13–18 and a Teen Summer Program that offers high school youth a free, flexible summer experience at the Teen Clubhouse. More than 6,500 Club members participate in programs at 26 school-based Clubs, and there is one Teen Center and 24 school-based Club sites in San Leandro, San Lorenzo, South Hayward, and Union City. The organization partners with San Leandro Unified School District, San Lorenzo Unified School District, and New Haven Unified School District to offer after-school programming and Summer Learning programs, and it is the primary provider for after-school programs in partnership with San Leandro and San Lorenzo Unified School Districts. Summer Learning programs are brought to families in partnership with ELO-P (Expanded Learning Opportunities Program), and transportation is available from San Lorenzo High School to Edendale Middle School for SLZUSD Summer Learning summer school participants.
Students in these programs receive 740 hours of expanded learning time, a 60% increase over the school day alone, equivalent to 100 extra school days. Data reported by the organization state that 85% of youth avoid summer learning loss by participating in Summer Camps, 83% of Club members live in households that qualify for free or reduced lunch programs, 92% of Club members feel safe and supported by staff, 90% of youth who come to the Club graduate from high school and go on to achieve academic success, and 90% of youth graduate from high school with a post-secondary education plan. Free full-day camps are offered on select days when school is closed during the academic year, and Summer Learning programs are free for students participating in partner districts’ summer school programs. Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro also offers volunteer opportunities for businesses as part of corporate social responsibility programs, and provides indoor and outdoor spaces that are described as ideal for events, meetings, and team building activities.

The organization’s history includes an informal recreational organization formed in September 1945 by Jerry Lyons and Father Manuel Alvernaz, which became an organized Boys’ Club by January 1946. Articles of Incorporation were filed on July 8, 1947, and a new building opened in 1960. A modern Olympic-size swimming pool was constructed and dedicated on September 23, 1961. On November 22, 1966, the Boys’ Club entered into a lease with the City of San Leandro for property located at 401 Marina Blvd. In 1991, the Boys Club became coed and changed its name to the Boys & Girls Club. The Hillside School unit opened in 1997. In 2007 and 2008, the Boys & Girls Club partnered with San Leandro and San Lorenzo Unified School Districts to ASES and became the primary provider for after-school programs. In 2019, the Club completed a $10.5+ million Capital Campaign, and in 2021, the Club reopened its building as a Teen Center and Community Hub.
For Summer Camp, payments can be made online via the Parent Portal during the enrollment process or at the Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday–Friday. At the Teen Clubhouse, payments can be made Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and only debit or credit card payments are accepted; cash is not accepted. Enrollment confirmation is only issued once the full balance is cleared.
