San Marcos Youth Basketball is a non-profit recreational basketball league where kids play organized basketball. The program includes separate girls and boys divisions within each age group and uses different ball sizes for each division based on grade and gender.
• Ages: 6–14 years old
• Price: A nominal late registration fee will be charged for players signing up after the initial registration sessions. A nominal drop fee will be charged if an official drop request is submitted after the draft night for the applicable Division. Any returned checks will be charged the same as the nominal drop fee.
San Marcos Youth Basketball (SMYBB) is open to boys and girls in grades 1 through 8 living in the surrounding communities of San Marcos, and players must be in at least 1st grade to play in the league. Under certain circumstances, players in Kindergarten who are six years old on or before September 15th may play in the Pee-Wee Division if an original birth certificate is presented and the league approves the request. Within the league, there is a Pee-Wee Division for 1st and 2nd graders, a C Division for 3rd and 4th graders, a B Division for 5th and 6th graders, and an A Division for 7th and 8th graders, with separate girls and boys divisions for each age group. An appropriate number of teams is formed within each division so the maximum number of youth players can participate, and the number of teams depends on the number of eligible registered players and available coaches. Players may register for league play during open registration sessions using an online registration tool.
All registered and certified youth players receive an official SMYBB uniform with a jersey and shorts, and players are not allowed to participate in league games unless they are dressed in their regulation uniform. Players may not alter the look of their uniform during the season, and no alterations or changes to the uniform are allowed except for fit. Each player must provide their own pair of court shoes with non-marking soles, and uniforms must be neat and clean with shirts tucked in during the game. An appropriate solid color t-shirt or sports top for girls may be worn under the uniform. Players are not allowed to wear jewelry, rings, or watches during play, and medically required bracelets or tags must be securely taped with only the medical alert information showing. A guard, cast, or brace made of hard and unyielding materials may not be worn even if covered with soft padding. Ball sizes are set by division: Pee-Wee divisions use a 27.5 oz junior size ball, C division and A and B girls divisions use a 28.5 oz regulation women’s ball, and A and B boys divisions use a 29.5 oz regulation men’s ball.
The San Marcos Youth Basketball League’s mission is to bring the local community together to develop in children good sportsmanship, self-control, and self-discipline through basketball. The organization does not discriminate against any player on the basis of race, creed, religion, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran status. This is a non-profit recreational league.
The SMYBB Board of Directors governs and administers all league activities. Each division has one or more Division Representatives who are responsible for sharing information and enforcing Board policy, and these representatives assist coaches with concerns that might require Board attention. All questions or concerns are first addressed to the respective Division Representatives, and questions about sponsoring a team are directed to the SMYBB President.
San Marcos Youth Basketball season registration announcements are displayed to citizens of San Marcos and nearby communities through signage, email blasts, and the league website. Team sponsorship is a way for local businesses to take part in the program, and every team is expected to try to get a sponsor. Team sponsorship supports the non-profit basketball recreation program, and tax-deductible donations or sponsorships help defray overall costs.
Parents or guardians must sign an SMYBB Registration Form that includes a Medical Release Authorization, which holds the league harmless in case of player injuries and provides emergency medical information and permission. The family’s primary medical insurance must be used in the event of player injury, and secondary medical insurance is provided for all players under the general liability and medical insurance policy of SMYBB, with a deductible. The SMYBB League arranges playing facilities for all official games and practices and provides a list of schools available for practice along with approved practice times after receiving approval from the San Marcos Unified School District. It is recommended that any practice site not on the approved list be discussed with the appropriate Division Representatives. No smoking or alcohol consumption is allowed at any time at Corky Smith Gym, and all parking regulations there must be followed, with violators subject to citation by the City of San Marcos Sheriff’s Department.
