Shooting Stars Special Needs Basketball offers basketball along with several family activities, including a Monthly Family Group Walk, Family Laser Tag, and a Family Event called Bingo Fun to Kick Off the Summer. The program includes a first 8 game season for participants.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: First 8 game season, with volunteer orientation and uniform pick-up on 8/24/25 and the first game on 9/7/25
The program’s schedule also includes the Shooting Stars–Together in Motion Monthly Family Group Walk on Friday 12/5 at 3:30, Family Laser Tag at Invasion Laser Tag in San Marcos on Friday 12/12 from 4:30–6:30, and the Family Event: Bingo Fun to Kick Off the Summer! on Sunday 5/31/26 from 4:30–6:30pm, with check-in starting at 4:15. Shooting Stars Special Needs Basketball was started in 2006, and in the fall of 2006 a youth basketball team in San Marcos, California led to the Shooting Stars Basketball program. Having run the Shooting Stars Basketball program for 20 years, the family created Shooting Stars Special Needs Group, which was established in 2025.
Shooting Stars Special Needs Basketball was created as an inclusive program designed for children ages 5–25 with a variety of disabilities, including Autism, Down Syndrome, and other physical and mental disabilities, to learn and enjoy the game of basketball in a fun, non-competitive environment. The Shooting Stars Special Needs Group is dedicated to providing fun, non-competitive, and encouraging activities for underserved individuals with disabilities in the San Marcos community, and also offers informal events for families that promote community, family, and movement. The purpose of Shooting Stars Special Needs Group is to serve persons with disabilities and the community at large by coordinating activities and providing resources to promote inclusion and create opportunities for special needs individuals and families. The organization describes its growth by saying that Shooting Stars is now basketball and so much more.
The Shooting Stars Special Needs Group Inc. board consists of co-founders Rick Clark and Emmie Clark, as well as founding board member and vice president Randy Kato. Randy Kato is a consultant based out of Las Vegas, Nevada and a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Economics. The program received support from the management and staff at the City of San Marcos/Corky Smith Gym, the entire San Marcos Youth Basketball (SMYBB) board, and help from board members Maria Hoye and Kevin Kennedy.
