Peninsula Bridge was founded in 1989 as a 5-week summer program, and its first academic summer program in 1990 served 26 students from the Ravenswood School District. In 2015, Peninsula Bridge approved a new strategic plan to expand its academic programming throughout the year and increase its focus on social-emotional development, and as part of this plan it merged with Building Futures Now. The organization’s mission is to empower highly motivated, first-gen, low-income students to achieve college and career success through individualized support and transformational educational opportunities. Peninsula Bridge offers a 13-year commitment, with a cohort of first-generation students joining as rising 4th graders and receiving support from 4th grade through college through long-term academic support and programming, personalized advising, socio-emotional development, tutoring, career exposure, and 1:1 mentorship. Its holistic program model includes academic support, socio-emotional learning, mental health wellness, parent education, a cohort-centric and selective cohort-based model, wrap-around services, a rigorous and engaging curriculum, comprehensive parent education, and a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging. The broader Peninsula Bridge pathway also includes a High School Academy for grades 9–12 with year-round college readiness preparation, College Access guidance through the application, financial aid, and enrollment process, College Success summer workshops and year-round advising, and College to Career programming with career exposure and development, internship coaching, and workshops on resume development, interview preparation, personal branding, and networking. Peninsula Bridge merged with Building Futures Now to maximize its impact on under-resourced and first-generation students on the Peninsula. One testimonial describes Peninsula Bridge as engaging with students and building strong relationships starting in fourth grade and continuing throughout college, with volunteers and staff committed to student success over time.
