About
Oshiro Dojo offers training in the Shima-Ha Shorin-ryu style of Okinawan karate and the Yamanni-ryu style of kobudo (weapons). Classes include practice of kata (forms) and kumite (sparring), with typical classes focusing on either kata or kumite. Kata practice at Oshiro Dojo focuses on physical technique and body awareness, while kumite practice focuses on confidence versus an opponent, timing, and interpersonal awareness.

Oshiro Dojo classes are taught by experienced instructors who have practiced and taught martial arts for decades. The dojo leadership includes RBKD Chief Instructor (Shihan) Toshihiro Oshiro and Daiki Takekawa, head instructor (Dojoshu) of Oshiro Dojo San Mateo. Sensei Takekawa has trained with Shihan Oshiro for over 25 years. Oshiro Dojo teaches in a friendly, non-competitive environment, with beginner and advanced classes for adults and for children ages 5 and up.
The Ryukyu Bujutsu Kenkyu Doyukai (RBKD) is an international organization founded in 1985 by Master Chogi Kishaba in Okinawa and Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro in the United States for the study and development of traditional Okinawan karate and kobujutsu technique. Oshiro Dojo was founded by Shihan Oshiro after he emigrated from Okinawa in 1978 to teach karate in the United States, and over the next 40 years he trained hundreds of students at his Northern California dojos. In late 2019, after moving back to Okinawa, Shihan Oshiro appointed his longtime student Daiki Takekawa as head instructor of Oshiro Dojo San Mateo.
The technical foundation of the RBKD is Yamanni Chinen-ryu, an Okinawan bo style commonly called Yamanni-ryu or Yamane-ryu. While Yamanni-ryu bo is the heart of the RBKD curriculum, sai is also practiced extensively, and the same fundamentals are used with other traditional Okinawan weapons such as eku, tunfa, and nunchaku. All RBKD member schools include Yamanni-ryu kobujutsu in their curriculum, typically alongside one or more empty-hand styles of martial arts. Today the RBKD includes active member dojos in the United States, Europe, and Japan, and Shihan Oshiro teaches many seminars each year around the world. Shihan Oshiro visits the San Mateo dojo a couple of times each year and teaches group classes and private lessons during those visits, and he teaches privately in Okinawa while leading the worldwide RBKD organization.
