Guards-in-Training (GIT) Program
Marinwood Community Center, 775 Miller Creek Road, San Rafael, CA 94903
About
The Guards-in-Training (GIT) Program includes helping teach in the Marinwood Swim Academy during morning lessons, learning and practicing lifeguarding skills, enjoying free swim time, and barbecuing every Friday. Participants have access to an exclusive pool-side GIT “Shack,” morning breakfast treats after morning lessons, and frequently create what the program describes as “fun chaos” at the pool. Each week highlights different skills and features new activities, games, and themes, and attending multiple sessions is highly encouraged.
• Ages: 13–14 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00am–2:00pm, in one-week sessions offered throughout the summer
• Price: Fee: $140 per session; Session 3 (6/29–7/2) is $112
The program offers an introduction to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding curriculum, described as thorough and exciting. It is also described as a perfect introduction to what it takes to be a Marinwood Lifeguard, and participants have a stated opportunity to become a junior staff member. The program is overseen by John Paul Kessler, Recreation Supervisor (Adult Programs & Aquatics). The mission of the organizing district is to develop and promote recreation programs and opportunities which satisfy the majority needs of the public, to develop and maintain park areas and recreational facilities and preserve open spaces for public enjoyment, and to designate the district’s parks, recreation services, and facilities as open, available, and welcoming of all people.
