Diablo Day Camp is a local and affordable day camp that operates under Girl Scouts of Northern California and is 100% volunteer run. All of GSNorCal’s day camps are run by dedicated volunteers, and these volunteer-run camps are staffed by screened and trained volunteers. Teenage leaders, called Program Aides and Elves, learn leadership skills, and many former campers return as Elves and as adult volunteer staff. The mission of Diablo Day Camp is to “build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place” while fostering a love of the outdoors.
In 1954, local Girl Scouts purchased 65 acres in Lafayette, and ownership of the site passed to Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area Council (now Girl Scouts of Northern California) in the early 1960s, with some acreage sold in 1977, leaving about 40 acres today. In 1972, Dorothy “Sand” Giboney formed the Diablo Day Camp Committee, and in 2002 Carol “Firefly” Ashimine took over as administrator and Diablo Day Camp launched a satellite camp at Little Hills Ranch in San Ramon. In 2014, the Girl Scout council proposed closing Camp Twin Canyon, but the site was saved through a task force’s work and generous community donations, and Diablo Day Camp continues there. For over 60 years, Diablo Day Camp has been an East Bay Girl Scout tradition, with every year over 1000 girls attending and some families attending together for over 30 years, with support from the Kiwanis Club of Martinez.
Parent feedback shared via TripAdvisor includes comments such as “My daughter gained confidence this week, came home singing and was happy all week. Thank you!!!” and “This is my daughter's favorite camp. She was so excited to attend again this year and the camp lived up to expectations. The fun activities, time spent outside and great volunteers make this such a wonderful camp!” Other TripAdvisor comments describe it as an “Amazing experience with dedicated volunteers,” say “My camper had a great time and loved everything about it,” and note “She had a great experience and can’t wait for next year.”
