Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble Programs offer activities in storytelling, playwriting, producing, and acting. The program includes high-quality theater and playwriting workshops, as well as a virtual playwriting forum.

Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble’s mission is to support and enrich the lives of Latinas in the performing arts. The organization offers programming that nurtures storytelling, playwriting, producing, and acting, and brings seasoned theater professionals to facilitate high-quality workshops both in person and online. It creates opportunities and leadership roles for Latinas in the performing arts and supports, develops, incubates, and produces work that reflects, impacts, and empowers the diverse Latine/x community. It serves as an incubator for voices that have been historically excluded in theater and believes in the transformative power of theater, aiming to entertain and challenge, foster cross-cultural understanding, and be a catalyst for personal healing and social justice. The program prohibits discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying in educational programs, activities, or employment on the basis of listed protected characteristics.
Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble (BOFLTE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is award-winning and the only Latina theater company in Orange County. It has been conceived since the early 2000s, officially incorporated as a nonprofit in 2007, and between 2006–2011 produced over 20 world premieres. Since its 2015 re-emergence, it has remained committed to its mission. BOFLTE holds an Artists-in-Residency, since 2016, with California State University Fullerton’s Grand Central Arts Center, and in 2024 it launched a community partnership with California State University Fullerton’s Theatre Department to produce intergenerational work that engages CSUF’s students, alumni, and the Santa Ana community. It has been honored by Groundswell (OC Human Relations) as a Community Leader for “extraordinary contributions to the county in the area of human and/or civil rights.” BOFLTE was awarded Best Play for its book “The COVID Monologues” by the International Latino Book Awards (ILBA), is one of 52 recipients of The National Latinx Theater Initiative (a three-year grant), a two-year grant recipient of The City of Santa Ana Artist Grant, and an awardee of The TYA/USA ReImagine Grant. Cherríe Moraga’s “Digging Up the Dirt,” produced by BOFLTE, was supported by a 2010 National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Master Artist Grant and was named to the “Best of 2010” lists by OC Weekly and Examiner.com. BOFLTE is a member of Network of Ensemble Theaters, Arts Orange County, the Cohort of The BIPOC Artistic Directors of Greater Los Angeles, and Latinx Theatre Alliance (Los Angeles).
The ensemble is based in downtown Santa Ana in Orange County and has made an indelible mark on the Orange County arts scene, the greater Los Angeles area, and beyond. It partners with UC Irvine's Brown Bag Theatre Co, Black Student Union of GGHS, Santa Ana HS Theatre Conservatory, Los Amigos HS Theatre, #ProtectPuvungna, and Cal State University of Fullerton's Theatre Department. The organization supports, develops, incubates, and produces work that reflects, impacts, and empowers the diverse Latine/x community, and aims to raise awareness of critical issues in the community, foster cross-cultural understanding, and be a catalyst for personal healing and social justice.
OC Weekly described Breath of Fire as “a theater that cares [about] its surrounding community…producing vitally relevant and topical work.” Angela Apodaca of Breath of Fire said, “The community of Breath of Fire Writers and the ensemble members, who are luminaries and so dear to me, all help create this extraordinary space that ignites so much creativity and connection.” Yasmin Madadi of Breath of Fire shared that through 2016 retreats and workshops, she connected with leaders in education, produced two ten-minute plays, built professional relationships and a community for sharing her writing, cultivated an aesthetic and path as a writer, and made friends.
