About

America Reads America Counts (ARAC) Virtual Tutoring focuses on reading and mathematics through virtual tutoring sessions. The program includes one-on-one work with individual students, group work, and class activities in these subject areas.

• Ages: 6–13 years old

America Reads & America Counts at UCSB began in 1997 and is celebrating over 25 years at UCSB. America Reads America Counts (AR/AC) is funded through Federal Work Study and trains UCSB students to be tutors in elementary schools. Each tutor is expected to encourage students in the subject areas of reading and mathematics and support children in their school development. Associated Students Community Affairs Office and local school districts work together to implement UCSB’s response to the national America Reads America Counts challenge. Spring 2020 was ARAC’s first attempt at virtual tutoring in partnership with the Isla Vista Youth Projects (IVYP), and in-person and virtual tutoring continue into the 2025–26 academic year.
