• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Price: Camp Rince Ceol provides shuttle service ($50.00 roundtrip) to/from Santa Barbara Municipal Airport. CRC provides shuttle service ($50.00 roundtrip) for campers taking Amtrak.
Camp Rince Ceol uses dorms with double-occupancy rooms and communal showers and bathrooms serving every six rooms in a hallway, with limited triple rooms available by prior approval from the office. Campers are housed on floors with campers of similar ages, with male and female campers and staff on separate floors, and all campers, counselors, nurses, and camp volunteers stay in the same dormitory. Each floor has common areas where campers and their groups can spend time together before lights out and during free time. Living quarters do not have air-conditioning, and campers are allowed to bring small portable fans and must bring their own linens and pillows for college twin-sized mattresses, while classrooms are air-conditioned.
The camp has access to production stages, black box theaters, rehearsal rooms, dance studios, athletic fitness rooms, and classrooms used for lectures, Q&A sessions with instructors, and group meeting times. A registered nurse is on staff 24/7, and the host campus provides 24/7 campus security, an on-site EMS squad, and a well-lit campus. The dining hall can accommodate dietary needs such as gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, and allergies such as peanut and tree nut.
Camp Rince Ceol is led by director Sheila Ryan and co-director Tony Davoren. Sheila earned her TCRG in 1993, studied Public Relations at C.W. Post College, danced professionally with The Chieftains and other music groups, spent three years with Riverdance the Show after being accepted in 1996, and directed and produced the 70-minute instructional Ceili video “Dancing at the Crossroads” in 1998. Tony was invited to join the Celtic Irish choral group Anuna in 1992, toured with Riverdance the Show for five years including performances at Radio City Music Hall and for the Prince of Wales at the Royal Variety Show in the Royal Albert Hall, and has recorded with Sting, The Chieftains, and Sinead O’Connor. Tony is featured on the Grammy Award–winning recordings “The Long Black Veil” and “Riverdance the Show,” directed the music for “Dancing at the Crossroads,” produced recordings for Irish soloists Katie McMahon and Dave Donohue, and has been tour manager for Tim O’Brien and for Altan.
According to its mission statement, Camp Rince Ceol brings Irish dancers from all over the world together in a non-competitive atmosphere to share their love of Irish dance while enriching themselves in Irish culture. The mission statement says the camp combines hard work and an enjoyable camp atmosphere and states that the primary purpose of the camp is fun. It also states that the camp aims to create an environment that is healthful and safe, where encouragement, laughter, and joy are the norm, and describes summer camp as a valuable and meaningful experience for all.
The camp’s partnership with its host college is described as offering the chance to expand the variety of camp programs while maintaining the intimacy that has contributed to the camp’s success. Testimonials from campers and parents describe campers attending for multiple years, including from age 7 and up, and traveling from places such as Mexico to attend. Parents and campers report experiences such as first-time sleepaway camp, making new friends, recognizing familiar faces at feisanna, enjoying activities like trivia night, the waterslide, and the showcase, and receiving daily photo updates from counselors. Several testimonials state that campers wanted to return the following year or even the following week, and one adult camper describes being a new dancer who felt supported by staff and fellow dancers.
