Snow Valley Basketball Camp at Westmont College was established in 1961, and the summer of 2020 marked its 59th consecutive year in camp operations. The camp offers an overnight basketball experience with campers residing in shared-bathroom dorms, assigned by age and roommate request when possible, and linens are not provided. Campers are advised to bring a bathing suit, pool towel, sunscreen for optional swim time, and about $40 in cash as suggested spending money, and drugs, alcohol, and tobacco are strictly prohibited and are grounds for dismissal without a refund. The program maintains an eight to one player to coach ratio and provides each participant with a Personal Player Report Card noting strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for individual improvement, along with personal evaluation. It is recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of the top fundamental basketball camps in the country and is part of Snow Valley Basketball Schools, which are also offered at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
The leadership team includes Camp Director Pete Rivas, Co-Directors Manasa Chanaiwa, Rachel Nagel, and Pablo Garcia, and Guest Clinician Chris Oliver. Pete Rivas has almost forty years of boys and girls youth, high school, and college coaching experience, is on staff at Buena Park High School as Varsity Assistant Coach for the girls basketball program, is a USA Basketball licensed coach, and is a long-time Nike Basketball Camp Director and Snow Valley Basketball Schools Co-Director. Manasa Chanaiwa has been helping players improve their fundamentals and reach their goals since 1988 and is USA Basketball licensed. Chris Oliver is the founder of Basketball Immersion, is described as a globally recognized leader in player and team development, modern coaching approaches, and basketball education, and has over two decades of experience coaching, consulting, and educating coaches and players at all levels of the game, with experience impacting organizations including NBA teams, Nike, EYBL, Sierra Canyon School, and basketball federations across the globe. Rachel Nagel is the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Pacific Ridge School and was previously a Division 1 coach for the University of San Diego and UC Davis women’s basketball programs. Pablo Garcia is entering his fifth year as Head Boys Basketball Coach at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino and has been coaching high school basketball for 16 years, most of those seasons in the Inland Empire.
The camp’s mission statement says its focus is on making each participant a seriously better player and on helping each participant become their best while building a winning attitude grounded in teamwork, precision, and excellence on and off the court. The program notes a partnership with WNBA legend Diana Taurasi at the all-girls session in July. A testimonial from Chris Oliver states that he is genuinely excited to share the game at Snow Valley, which he describes as a place that has shaped generations of players and coaches, and that any time someone steps into a gym with that kind of history, they feel a responsibility to honor it by teaching the game the right way.
