Gateway Educational Services was established in 2009 as Santa Barbara’s only non-profit learning center. It was founded by educators, business professionals, and community leaders passionate about changing access to education and the ways in which students learn. The organization states, “We believe all students will succeed if we open the doors closed to them, and create the gateway to learning and achievement,” and, “Through academic development, we create the opportunity for all students to succeed with programs specifically designed for their needs, with outstanding teaching and with creativity.” Its work includes helping parents advocate for their children, and it describes itself as more than just tutoring and as a supportive learning community. The program uses assessment to identify challenges in reading comprehension and/or math and then prescribes a program for improvement. The STEAM Academy for Girls is offered in the context that the fields of science and technology are growing at rapid rates while women only account for 5% of those fields.
The leadership team includes Co-Executive Directors and Founders Connie Alexander and Audrey Gamble; Board Chair Wendy Sims-Moten; Vice Chair Ben Haslund-Gourley; Board of Directors members Dr. Barbara DeVivo and Dr. Mike Kauffman; Parents Council members Rocio Jimenez, Martin Rios, Marguerite Cuevas, David Morales Sr., and Devika Stalling; and Young Leaders Board member Ben Haslund Gourley. Staff includes more than 10 tutors and teaching assistants from UCSB and 2 part-time reading specialists.
Parent and student testimonials include comments such as, “Our son made a complete turnaround thanks to Gateway, now he’s in honors classes!” from David Morales, and, “Our daughter Valerie advanced to the 5th grade thanks to Gateway Educational Services when teachers said she would be held back,” from the Rodriguez Family. Another parent, Andrea Bowdle, states, “Thank you Gateway – I can be the mom again, no more bad nights trying to do homework.” A student, Guadalupe C., Class of 2016, says, “Gateway did an amazing job helping me improve my test scores and getting accepted to college.” Another note highlights “Valedictorian Class of 2016′ Bishop Diego High School Attending Westmont College Joanna - Joanna.”
