The REEF Summer Camps take place at The REEF, which is an interactive aquarium of the Marine Science Institute. The REEF is described as an exciting and educational adventure for visitors and is designed to provide an unparalleled view of the ocean planet.

The Marine Science Institute, which runs The REEF, was established in 1969 and is described as an international leader in ocean and environmental research. The Institute administers more than 300 research projects every year, funded by over 100 awarding agencies, and engages 190 academic personnel in research. It provides an ocean view of the world to over 20,000 students of all ages annually and serves 15,000 people through Education and Outreach. The Institute states that it is committed to inclusion and equity and that it believes inclusion, equity, and representation of people from all backgrounds are crucial to its research. For community wildlife concerns, the Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute rescue hotline at 805-567-1505 is provided for reporting a stranded marine animal in distress, and the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network Helpline at 805-681-1080 is provided for contacting before touching or handling any wildlife.
