About
Youth Workshops offers training in vocals, acting, dance, audition preparation, and theatre skills through classes such as Intro to Theatre, Performance Foundations, Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Workshop, and Stage Combat Workshop. Participants work on script analysis, scene work, monologues, songs, improvisational work, and theatrical swordplay and combat. The Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Workshop recommends, but does not require, jazz shoes, and all participants are instructed to enter via the driveway and use the Stage Door entrance.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Workshops run in winter/spring sessions, including Intro to Theatre from January 12 through May 4, Performance Foundations from January 14 through April 29, Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Workshop from January 27 through March 24, and Stage Combat Workshop from January 25 through March 1, with specific weekday afternoon and Sunday afternoon class times and listed no-class dates.
• Price: Tuition ranges by workshop, including $345–$410 for Intro to Theatre and Performance Foundations, $255 for the Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Workshop ($205 when combined with another Spring workshop), and $195 for the Stage Combat Workshop ($155 when combined with another Spring workshop), with all students accepted on a “pay what you can” basis if they are unable to pay part or all of the tuition.
The Youth Workshops are part of the Morgan-Wixson Theatre’s Youth Education/Entertainment Series (Y.E.S.), which has worked with youth actors and presented shows in the Los Angeles area for over 30 years. The educational program includes module options such as the Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Workshop and Stage Combat Workshop, which can be taken on their own or along with another workshop, and training in theatrical combat focuses on memorizing sequences and timing actions with a partner while working on posture, balance, eye-hand coordination, and isometric strength. It is possible for a participant to be enrolled in a workshop and also be cast in a Y.E.S. show, with instructors and directors coordinating schedules, and workshops take the day off during tech week if any workshop members are in a cast, while enrollment in a workshop is not a guarantee of being cast.
Youth Workshops are offered by the Santa Monica Theatre Guild at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre, whose mission is to serve as a cultural hub providing a wide ranging, fully inclusive theatrical experience for the community, with core values that include Artistic Excellence, Collaboration, Inclusion, Diversity, Balance, Passion, Community, Education, and Respect. The Santa Monica Theatre Guild is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and operates with standing committees such as Education, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Fundraising & Grants, and Y.E.S., as well as special committees including Geoffrey Awards and Board Recruitment & Nomination. The organization’s leadership includes roles such as President & Chairman of the Board, Vice President Y.E.S., Vice President Production, and other board and officer positions.
Instruction in the Youth Workshops is provided by teaching artists such as Jamie Black, an award-winning writer and actor with over 25 years of acting experience in Chicago, whose background includes coaching a high school speech team, teaching on-camera acting and scene study, working with multiple Chicago theatre companies, and appearing on television series and in an award-winning webseries, as well as performing stand-up comedy. Choreographer and dance instructor Jessica Cashin began dancing at age two on the South Shore of Massachusetts and started teaching her own class at age 16. The Morgan-Wixson Theatre has received grants from the California Arts Council, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and the Santa Monica Arts Commission.
Parent and student comments about Youth Workshops include statements that the workshops helped participants become familiar with the theatre’s and directors’ expectations and styles, that a child “would light up every Wednesday” to attend, and that a participant “really grew so much as a performer” and found the workshops “really helpful.”
