6th Street Studio Education Program
6th Street Playhouse, 52 W 6th Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95401
About
The 6th Street Studio Education Program includes singing, dancing, acting, and improvisation. Students also learn how to memorize and how to write their own stories and put them on stage, doing things both on and off stage with seasoned professionals. Classes range from acting to directing, speech to playwriting, and more, and students learn and practice the “yes, and” of improvisation.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
The 6th Street Studio Education Program is part of 6th Street Playhouse, which has been producing live theatre and providing education programs since 2006. The program’s mission is to provide an empowering, accessible, and inclusive educational environment where students of all backgrounds and abilities can express themselves, explore ideas, and grow through the theatre arts, nurturing imagination, empathy, and community through collaboration and play. The Education Director, Jonathen Blue, has spent the last 15 years working in education as an elementary teacher, music instructor, and administrator, holds a professional conservatory certificate from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, and is trained in Fitzmaurice Voicework and Linklater Technique. 6th Street Playhouse has been named by the Press Democrat the Best Live Theatre in Sonoma County for eight consecutive years.
The 6th Street Studio collaborates with the Rincon Valley Union School District to provide trained teaching artists for its Extended Care program, serving K–6th grade students across seven schools, including many from underserved communities. Summer camps are geared toward youth performers of all skill levels and are described as full of fantastic fun, with opportunities to learn from local teaching artists, university-level educators, and Broadway professionals. Masks are highly recommended but not required for performances and special events, proof of Covid-19 vaccination is no longer required, children are not required to be vaccinated to participate, kids plan to perform without masks, and if a child becomes ill with Covid, proof of a negative test is required to return, with policies changing to reflect California mandates and CDC guidelines.
