Since 1985, the Seal Beach Lifeguard Department has been offering a Junior Lifeguard program. Participants are placed in age groups: “C” Group (9–11 years of age), “B” Group (12–13 years of age), “A” Group (14–15 years of age), and “AA” Group (16–17 years of age), and these groups are based primarily on age, with size, strength, ability, and confidence also considered. All participants must pass a 100-yard swim test before registering, with required times of 1:55 for the C group, 1:45 for the B group, and 1:35 for the A/AA group, and all swim tests are conducted by Seal Beach Junior Lifeguard Program staff. Participants are considered enrolled when they have passed the swim test and are registered in the program, and completion of any prep or conditioning class does not guarantee a spot.

Those who participated in the previous year are offered priority registration, and residents receive a discount on tuition and a priority registration period after the returning Junior Lifeguard enrollment period. The Junior Lifeguard Prep Class is designed to get children ready for the Junior Lifeguard swim test, and participants in this prep class take a swim test at the last class that counts toward the Junior Guard swim test, with only 36 spots available. The program information, including this year’s program dates and swim test dates and times, can be found in the Spring Shoreline Recreation Brochure and in the City News and Recreational Guide.
