Happy Planet Youth After School Eco Program is part of Afterschool Village and applies “green” ecological thinking to the growing human person. The neighborhood is described as the learning environment, and all activities take place in pursuit of sustainable living practices that support the local and global environment. The organization is currently moving, and the Happy Planet Youth After School Eco Program is closed during the move.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
Afterschool Village focuses on how children relate to self and others to reset emotional and mental well-being, with activities that target how children deal with stress, resilience, cooperation with peers, and sustaining hope and commitment through long-term projects. The environment is described as safe and multi-sensorial, including tactile, sound, and smell elements. Supportive services are provided by psychologists who interact with children, their families, and the schools, bridging different aspects of the child’s life.
Afterschool Village’s stated objective is to address primarily the needs of children in a relational and progressive context. Staff have child development and inter-disciplinary educational backgrounds, and supportive services are provided using positive and preventive methodologies and strategies. The founder, Raduca Kaplan, is a Marriage and Family Therapist who holds a Bachelor of Arts Cum Laude from Columbia University and a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Antioch University, is certified in Trauma Stress Studies, holds a supervisor certification, and holds a Marriage and Family Therapist license. The program teaches children to be an integral part of their communities by reaching out to other community groups, businesses, professionals, and political institutions.
