• Ages: 2–18 years old
AYSO has been providing a youth soccer program for more than fifty years. Its stated mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on AYSO’s Six Philosophies. These Six Philosophies are Everyone Plays®, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, Open Registration and Player Development. AYSO has a complete Player Development Pathway that includes options for toddlers, youth, adults, and players with developmental disabilities. The organization is built on volunteer support, with community members coaching, refereeing and supporting local Regions. AYSO states that it aims to create a fun, family-friendly environment where children can grow and develop soccer, leadership and social skills.
The national leadership team includes Rich Pagaliarli as a National Board Member, Kris Graff as Treasurer, Gary Van Otten as a National Board Member, and Michael Cassidy as Secretary. Community involvement is described as being built on the power of volunteer support, bringing together local community members to run the league.
Landon Donovan, the U.S. Men’s National Team’s leading goal scorer, has spoken about his experience with AYSO, saying, “The beauty of AYSO was that you had kids from all walks of life who just wanted to be active and run around and play soccer.” He also shared, “Josh would take me out to the backyard and kick the ball around with me,” and, “I started playing club soccer at the age of 10 but I wanted to continue playing AYSO because I enjoyed the camaraderie and the ability to just play for the love of the game.”
