About

Techakids offers hands-on projects such as modding and world building in Minecraft, Roblox Game Design 3D, Minecraft Server & Modding Engineering Camp, and MineCraft Server Engineering. Campers work with robotics through activities like Battle Robots with Artificial Intelligence (A.I), Robotics Lab with A.I, BattleBots, robotics lab, quadruped (robotic dogs) robotic programming, humanoid robotic programming, building neural-network robots, and working with advanced robotics systems. The program also includes creating artistic masterpieces, programming microcontrollers with C++, understanding the Internet of Things, building artificial intelligent devices, virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D modeling and printing, mobile app and mobile game design, drone programming with Python, Python programming to train neural network models used in AI, using cloud computing resources, outdoor activities, games, team-building games, voluntary homework assignments, practice drills, and virtual classrooms with a live stream.

• Ages: 6–13 years old
• Schedule: Weekly camps, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 12 PM

Techakids is part of the Greater South Bay STEM Foundation, a nonprofit educational foundation founded in 2015 that gained tax-exempt nonprofit status in 2016. Techakids and the Greater South Bay STEM Foundation have been part of the South Bay community for over a decade, and the camp was started about ten years ago. The organization states that its mission is to offer the highest possible quality in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education, with a focus that transcends mere profit. It is described as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and nonprofit 501 (c)3 educational foundation, with nonprofit status enabling reinvestment of 100% of tuition fees into learning tools and profit removed from the equation.

Camp counselors are described as South Bay natives and some of the top college-educated students in the country, attending universities like Yale, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, and California Polytechnic University, and majoring in engineering, Pre Med, and computer science. Camp staff are described as caring award-winning staff, and the program notes a low camper-to-staff ratio of 1:4 with two or three instructors per class. The leadership team includes Co-Founder Toni Blackmon and Co-Founder Ryan Gagajena.

Techakids and the Greater South Bay STEM Foundation report that they have served over 7,000 children in summer camps and over 6,000 children in STEAM education. Their instructors are all from South Torrance, and they collaborate with AWS (Amazon Web Services), Google, and Microsoft Azure. The program uses exclusive resources, materials, and technology often described as too costly for many for-profit organizations, national coding franchises, and local schools, including state-of-the-art robotics, production-grade robots used in research labs, industries, and governments worldwide, and advanced robotics systems rarely seen in U.S. classrooms. The curriculum is described as mirroring top universities including Stanford, Berkeley, and MIT, challenging students 2 to 3 grade levels above their current one and exposing them to high school and college level material, with a philosophy that “STEAM is not just taught--it is experienced.”

Techakids has created a Makerspace for children to explore with technology and computer programming as tools, and its AI robotics program has been running since 2018. The Greater South Bay STEM Foundation states that it aims to make STEM programs readily affordable and accessible to elementary and middle school families in the Greater South Bay and surrounding communities, and that every dollar is spent on children in the South Bay. The program is described as South Bay's premier summer camp experience and more than just a camp, a gateway to the future for children in the Greater South Bay.

Camper feedback includes comments such as, “I love Techakids because I can build cool stuff.” – Dasy, Camper, and “I get to be myself, make new friends, and play amazing games every day!” – Leo, Camper.
