About
Camp Joybound introduces students to veterinary medicine and animal care through hands-on experience with dogs and cats. Participants learn alongside, shadow, and engage in hands-on care with clinic, animal care, training, and adoption experts, and they meet veterinarians and animal care experts to learn about their backgrounds, career pathways, and to ask questions about their work. Campers also see how surgery takes place, learn how to provide the best care for dog and cat wellbeing, practice techniques for dog and cat training and safety, and take part in animal guardianship education.

Camp Joybound is described as an award-winning, weeklong camp that is perfect for students with a passion for animal care and wellness, life sciences, and medicine. Joybound People & Pets was founded in 1991, and its headquarters includes a 37,700-square-foot animal care facility completed in 2003, a 7,900-square-foot Engelstad Training Pavilion added in 2021, and an expanded 4,900-square-foot animal care wing and veterinary clinic added in 2021, all within a 50,500-square-foot campus. The headquarters was envisioned as an animal shelter that felt more like a lifesaving community center, with homey condos that set standards for housing shelter guests in the animal welfare industry, a beautiful adoption and community center in a park-like setting where people of all ages can enjoy positive interactions with animals, a learning center for humane education, state-of-the-art veterinary facilities, a training pavilion, a Shelter to Service working animal training program, an honor wall in a public park, and a Boutique that sells pet supplies to support lifesaving programs. The campus also includes a solar array for greater operational efficiency.
Joybound’s mission is to inspire and nurture the human-animal bond and bring people and animals together to enrich each other’s lives. Joybound People & Pets is described as a renowned local leader and national model in the animal wellness community and is a proud recipient of funding from Maddie’s Fund®. The organization feeds its animals high-quality Purina pet food, and tens of thousands of Northern Californians have entered its doors seeking unconditional love between people and companion animals. Joybound People & Pets serves Contra Costa County, the Bay Area, and beyond.
