About

Camp Wonder is a summer camp where children play sports, go swimming, climb a rock wall, do arts and crafts, and attend a camp “prom.” Each year, children with chronic and life-threatening skin diseases from around the country attend Camp Wonder for a week and focus on just being a kid.

• Ages: 6–16 years old
• Schedule: Each year, children with chronic and life-threatening skin diseases from around the country attend for a week.
• Price: Since Camp Wonder recognizes that these families already take responsibility for most of the financial burden for medical treatment, Camp Wonder is free to campers and their families and covers all costs, including round-trip transportation.

Camp Wonder is part of the Children’s Skin Disease Foundation (CSDF), which was founded in 2000 with the mission of creating free programs to improve the lives of children and families impacted by skin disease. Camp Wonder, founded in 2001, gives children aged 6–16 diagnosed with skin disease an opportunity to attend summer camp, when they may not have been able to otherwise given their medical needs, while also providing community, support, joy, and fun. Camp Wonder is described as a special place free of judgement and stares, with an environment of acceptance and support so campers can be comfortable in their skin rather than singled out for being different, and gives them a week of wonder to empower them to believe that their disease does not define them.

For 20 years, Camp Wonder has partnered with various dermatology hospitals to welcome dermatology and pediatric residents, and medical and nursing students. During the week of camp, these volunteers gain a better understanding of how skin disease impacts patients. CSDF covers all costs for the medical staff, essentially creating dermatology scholarships for future caregivers. Lead With Wonder provides leadership and mentorship opportunities for Camp Wonder campers and young adult staff.
