Options for Learning was founded in 1981 and has more than four decades of partnership, growth, and impact, including 45 years of being a leader in helping families improve their lives by building a positive foundation for school, social, and life success. Its mission states that Options for Learning supports children’s success by partnering with families, educators, and communities to provide quality learning opportunities and to advance childhood education. The organization serves nearly 11,000 children and their families each year across more than 65 locations in the San Gabriel Valley, Whittier, Pomona Valley, and Northeast Los Angeles areas, with 161 classrooms at 67 locations. It serves 3,338,793 meals and snacks annually in centers and through contracted home-based providers, provides 7,504 free child care referrals each year, and offers 16,642 workshops, visits, and support calls annually for child care providers. Options for Learning employs 980 staff members and is funded through federal, state, and local contracts so eligible families or those with special needs can access care at little or no cost, with some programs providing support through age 21 for those with special needs. The organization includes children with disabilities in all programs with dedicated support and offers continuity of care from infancy through eighth grade. Its educational philosophy blends a child-centered, whole-child approach with real-world, inquiry-driven learning, using indoor environments with purposeful play, collaborative learning, and skill-building activities that feature natural tones and nature-inspired elements, and outdoor environments that emphasize connection with nature, hands-on discovery, movement, and exploration. Offices are closed on Fridays to promote a healthy work-life balance. One parent shared, “I didn’t know I qualified until someone told me. Now I can work and know my son is safe and happy.”
