About
Woodwind Instruction From The Ground Up offers private music lessons for saxophone, flute, clarinet, and other woodwinds including flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, and all saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone, and soprano). Lessons include rhythm work using drumsticks, a metronome, a drum machine, the iRealPro app, and loops on Logic Pro, along with ear training by memorizing beginning band songs and learning jazz transcriptions. Students also work on singing to identify and name notes, audition preparation, solo work, classical training in tone, technique and mechanics, classical/traditional and solo performance repertoire, etudes, band program curriculum, sight-reading, tone building through etudes, scales, music theory, understanding chords and modes, jazz studies, band jazz program curriculum, and Zoom music lessons online.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
For over twenty-five years, instructor Cece Worrall Rubin has been teaching students as a professional musician and woodwind tutor. The instructor focuses on starting students as soon as they can hold a woodwind instrument, with an emphasis on very young students as “clean slate” learners and on band programs at students’ schools, including auditions and chair positions. The program includes work with scales such as Major, Natural minor, Melodic minor, Harmonic minor, Diminish, Bebop, Whole Tone, and modes based on these scales, as well as learning pre-written jazz transcriptions, writing out custom solos for young jazz musicians, and writing solo transcriptions for advanced jazz students.
The instructor analyzes and upgrades equipment, makes minor repairs, and gives recommendations for major repairs and maintenance. Students can prepare solo performance repertoire for auditions, solo ensemble, and college arts supplement videos, and can create video and audio recordings for art supplements to colleges and universities, with assistance uploading to college portals and/or YouTube. Additional audio and video recording and editing services use Apple’s Logic Pro, Apollo Twin Thunderbolt or Focusrite Scarlet audio interfaces, a Blue “Blueberry” microphone, KRK monitors, a Canon 70D camera, and Logic Pro/Final Cut Pro for editing.
Styles and genres taught in Woodwind Instruction From The Ground Up include Classical/Traditional, Jazz Standards, Jazz Improv, Rock, Blues, R&B, Funk, and Top 40. Lessons include artistry, articulations, interpretation, and dynamics for young learners, and use humor, metaphors, and fun as an important factor. Zoom lessons are offered to students in other states and during vacations, and the instructor is able to research state honor band requirements for Zoom students.
The instructor has been background checked, fingerprinted, and approved to work with youth by Conejo Unified School District, Calvary Community Church, and BSF – Bible Study Fellowship International. In 2002, the instructor was approved by the US Government for musical performances in the context or presence of the president and/or candidates. The program’s stated mission is to inform clients and people inquiring about the instructor’s direction and focus as a musician and woodwind tutor.
