About

The Homework/Tutoring program includes one-on-one tutoring sessions that always include an element of fun through games, challenges, and bingo nights for prizes. Children use iPads along with print and online resources that match their individual needs and assessment plans. The program also includes nutrition snacks for energy and brain power.

Each year, 20 tutors and 2 tutor leaders, who are retired or active educators, community professionals, and post-secondary students, work one-on-one with 20 children and youth enrolled in the program. The program is described as designed to increase self-confidence and academic performance, and it has been described as overwhelmingly successful as skills are developed and interest in studies is enhanced. The Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation states that 100% of all funds donated stay in Windsor-Essex County. The foundation is associated with the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society but is incorporated as a separate body with its own Board of Directors and funds programs for children and families. The Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation’s mission is to provide financial support that contributes to the safety and well-being of the children and families of the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society through fundraising initiatives and public education. The leadership team includes Derrick Drouillard, Executive Director of the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society, and Cheryl Sprague, President of the Board of Directors of the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation. One youth, Emily, has said, “The Foundation acts almost as a loving parent. They give you the things you need to blossom, to be the person you always believed you could be.”
