About
Drama Maniacs is a theatre program that focuses on kid-created productions where students help write, direct, and star in their own shows. Activities include improv and theatre games, scriptwriting, music theatre, and creating their own characters. The program offers afterschool drama classes, summer theatre camps, an in-school educational theatre program, and community drama classes.
Kim Williams is the Director and founder of Drama Maniacs and holds a BFA in Music Theatre from the University of Windsor in Canada. She obtained her California K-5 Multiple-Subject Teaching Credential with authorization to teach Theatre and Vocal Music, as well as her MA in Education from Antioch University, Los Angeles. Her background includes work as the Assistant Director of Drama Kids of Las Vegas and experience as a professional actor. The program describes itself as all about kid-created productions and states that when kids are given the chance to develop their own creative projects in a safe environment, the results are “DRAMATIC!!!” Drama Maniacs is described by the program as the drama program Kim always wanted when she was a kid, and its theatre camps are described as offering a “CRAZY” summer with “INSANELY fun” and “CRAZY” experiences, with no boring rehearsals, no stress, and no auditions, and everyone included in the entire show in a relaxed, student-centered performance experience where each child is celebrated equally for their contribution and participation in a safe, positive learning environment and where the focus is not all about the final product but on students’ enjoyment.
Parents describe that students are given creative ability to structure the play, create characters, and help create the show, and they note that everyone is involved in putting the plays together. Parent testimonials mention that the program is very different from other programs they have experienced, that it is a positive and exciting experience, and that children are able to express themselves without judgment in what parents describe as a safe environment to “be a crazy kid and try on new roles.”
