During the 4-day, 3-night adventure into the Colorado backcountry, campers organize every aspect of the backpacking trip, including menu planning, supply decisions, and gear packing. On this trip, campers navigate backcountry trails, cook their own meals, attempt to summit a high peak, and camp under the stars. Campers also take part in a solo experience, hiking out from basecamp to spend reflective time on their own.

Older campers in this program get a light look behind the scenes of camp, helping with simple activity support and participating in the planning of a few camp moments. Programs with Avid4 Adventure evolve from age 3 all the way to 17, and its summer camps are described as highly acclaimed and accredited. Backpack rental is available for $30, and Avid4 merch can be delivered at camp with prices that vary and tax included.

One parent, Shelby, describes this as the first sleep away camp and backpacking experience for her daughter and notes that the counselors were incredibly welcoming and reassuring, that her daughter learned challenging outdoor skills and soft skills of leadership, collaboration, and communication, made bonds with her counselor and new friends, loved the thrill and adventure of the backpack, and was pushed out of her comfort zone in ways that developed her self-confidence. Another parent, Emily Medress, calls it her daughter’s favorite camp, explains that her daughter had never done any of the activities before, and says that stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, and biking became her favorites; she also notes that her daughter arrived biking with training wheels and, after camp and two more park trips, was able to ride without them, and that “AVID taught her so much.” Parent Molly Marienthal says that it is a great camp when a child is begging a parent to join them to see what they learned and did, and describes Avid’s staff as mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion, calling it a well-run program where kids learn new outdoor skills. Parent Suzanne Dayton says her kids had “the best time” at this camp, still talked about it over a month later, could not wait to go back next year, and that she loved that they were active every day and learning how to enjoy everything Colorado has to offer.
