The Canon City Area Recreation & Park District is a Colorado Special District that was established in 1965. Its mission is to provide a full range of easily accessible recreation and park programs, services and facilities for participants of every age, ability level, cultural background and financial status. The District’s main source of funding comes from property taxes collected from within its boundaries, an area of approximately 115 square miles. It is governed by a five-member Board elected at large from citizens living or owning property within the District’s boundaries, with elections conducted in May of every odd year. The Board holds monthly meetings at the District’s main office on the second Tuesday of every month beginning at 7:00 pm. The District currently employs 12 full-time employees and about 130 seasonal and part-time employees. The District works in conjunction with the City of Cañon City, Fremont County, Cañon City RE-1 School District, Fremont Sanitation District and many local businesses and non-profits to provide recreational services to community members.
