More than 85,000 Special Olympics Florida athletes and Unified partners train and compete in these year-round sports programs. The program’s stated mission is to create a world where people with intellectual disabilities are treated with respect and dignity and given the opportunities that all people deserve. The Race for Champions includes 5K events across Florida and brings together runners, walkers, supporters, and fundraisers. More than 300 law enforcement agencies are involved in carrying the torch on a 1,500-mile trip through 67 counties starting March 9, as part of the intrastate torch relay. Two Special Olympics Florida leaders, Lori Newcomb and BJ Mealy, have been named finalists for the 2026 SPORTYS, which recognizes excellence across the industry.
