Camp Makerie / Makerie Afterschool, 3536 NW 8th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32605
About
Camp Makerie includes activities such as building cardboard forts, joke battles, marshmallow fights, and time on a shark water slide. Each day features a puzzle to unveil the challenge of the day, and campers gather for campfire circles with silly campfire songs.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
Camp Makerie states that it is all about building community together, with a goal of building kids up and seeing them grow in positive ways in their relationship to their community, their friends, and themselves. The program focuses on radical kindness and empathy, with camp expectations of “Be Kind, Respect Camp, Work as a Team.” Activities can include character-building experiences that may be challenging or not always fun, and older camper groups can earn leadership buttons. Campers can receive “Awesome Possum Shout Outs” for acts that brighten someone’s day, and there is a Daily Challenge of the Day with pin-able buttons for completion, with no challenge repeated during the summer. End-of-day campfire circles use magical talking wands for sharing highs and lows, and the program uses Social Emotional Learning and Success Counseling strategies. Makerie Afterschool is a Florida licensed childcare facility, License # C08AL0149.
Parent testimonials report that children “really loved camp,” enjoyed positive affirmations and good character lessons, and liked hands-on, creative activities. Other testimonials state that children have been “begging” to sign up for more sessions and that parents “LOVE CAMP MAKERIE” as a place where kids can learn, create, and have fun during school breaks.
