Programs at CMON take place in a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 2002. The museum describes itself as Southwest Florida’s first museum devoted to children and families and as a fun, hands-on museum created for children from infancy through elementary school and their families. The organization states that it is a safe and wonderful place that inspires children and families to have fun while learning together and describes itself as a brain-building powerhouse with exhibits developed by experts in child psychology, where experimental play fosters creativity, curiosity, empathy, and self-esteem. CMON notes that interactive exhibits inspire curiosity through STEM, art, culture, and active play, and that an adult must accompany children under 18 at all times. The museum holds a 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator and Gold Transparency on Guidestar, and it highlights community involvement through the CMON Youth Council and stories from community members, as well as recognition of “Our Supporters.” The second level of the museum is temporarily closed for construction of Discovery School at CMON, an Early Learning Center, and for exhibit renovations. The museum offers calm down kits for sensory support, including weighted blankets, hot/cold neck wraps, noise-canceling headphones, timers, and more, and tickets are not available for purchase online, with admission purchased in person upon arrival.
