About
Mote Education Programs are part of Mote Marine Laboratory, an independent, nonprofit marine science institution founded in 1955. The programs take place within a global research enterprise that includes 38 programs and centers focused on marine science and education. People of all ages can participate in Mote Education Programs in person or virtually from anywhere in the world.
Mote Marine Laboratory operates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Its mission is to advance marine science and education leading to new discoveries, revitalization, sustainability and greater public understanding of the oceans. The organization’s facilities include the Mote Science Education Aquarium (Mote SEA), the Mote Aquaculture Research Park with multiple aquaculture research facilities and sustainable marine aquaculture and aquaponics demonstration systems, the Florida Red Tide Mitigation & Technology Development Facility, the International Coral Gene Bank, the Florida Coral Reef Restoration Crab Hatchery Research Center, and the Seagrass Restoration Technology Development Initiative. The Mote Aquaculture Research Park spans 200 acres, was constructed in 2001 to pioneer sustainable aquaculture technology to help feed the world, restock depleted species, and develop a viable domestic aquaculture industry in the U.S., and is home to Mote’s International Coral Gene Bank. Mote SEA is described by the phrase “Science is the Attraction.” Mote also supports marine science through three-year Mote Postdoctoral Research Fellowships that provide 100% salary support, research start-up, supplies, equipment, and mentorship, and exemplary fellows may be invited to join Mote as Staff Scientists after their initial appointment.
