About
Athens YMCA Youth Programs and Swim Lessons offers youth programs, swim lessons, fitness classes, summer day camp, child watch, adaptive swim, and music therapy. The program includes adaptive swim and music therapy specifically for children with special needs, along with a range of other youth activities throughout the year.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday with morning through evening hours, and on Saturdays during the day
The Athens YMCA has been a faithful part of the community since March 26, 1857. Its stated mission is to serve the Athens area through programs designed for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, and it is open to everyone in the community while focusing on spirit, mind and body. Each year, 11,000 people of all ages and backgrounds are served, with more than 250 volunteers donating their time. Annually, more than $250,000 is contributed to programming and financial assistance for children, teens, adults, families and seniors, and about 300 scholarships are awarded toward membership and youth programs. Each year, almost 50 children with special needs participate in adaptive swim and music therapy, over 4,000 children and teenagers take part in summer day camp, youth programs, swim lessons and child watch, and more than 600 children and adults participate in life-saving swim lessons. Each year, about 800 seniors stay active and healthy at the Y. One testimonial describes that “the Athens YMCA is not a gym, it's a GEM!” from former staff member Ben Fender.
