About
Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning creative youth development program that uses the discipline of dance to help children and teens develop social, emotional and cognitive skills. The program offers dance classes, technical theater production, a Summer Dance Camp, performance experiences, leadership activities, and mentor opportunities. Programs are open to all, regardless of dance experience, and integrate high-quality dance instruction with performance, leadership, and mentor opportunities.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Price: We provide our programs for a nominal fee, and sliding-scale tuition is available.
Moving in the Spirit offers several specific programs: Stepping Stones (ages 3–18) provides age-appropriate dance classes each week for boys and girls; Boys in Motion II (ages 10–13) is a place in which young men ages 10–13 can learn values, build confidence, and practice leadership skills; GLOW In Motion (ages 9–12) is an intermediate level program for girls 9–12 years old that empowers young women; Apprentice Corporation (ages 13–18) is an intensive training program that cultivates advanced dance technique and leadership skills in teens; Technical Theater Production (ages 13–18) is a technical training program featuring intensive hands-on instruction for teens interested in theater production; Summer Camp (ages 7–15) is a Summer Dance Camp that combines dance instruction with leadership training for young people ages 7–15; and the Ambassador Team (ages 10–18) is the premiere performance company that performs locally, regionally, and nationally. The program impacts 385 children and teens annually in Atlanta, GA.
Since 1986, Moving in the Spirit has been committed to principles of social justice, equity, accessibility, and the dignity of all people. Its curriculum cultivates unity, empathy, and compassion, and its artistic content focuses on diversity, tolerance, and social issues relevant to youth. The new performing arts center is fully ADA compliant, welcoming to guests of all physical abilities, and houses one of the few wheelchair-accessible technical booths in the city. The center was intentionally built next to a public rail and bus station to promote transit accessibility and equity.
Moving in the Spirit’s leadership team includes Executive Director Lita Ugarte Pardi; Senior Director of Advancement Selena Harper; Senior Director of Operations & Human Resources Kacey Dennis, Ed.S, LPC, NCC, SHRM-CP; Director of Marketing & Communications Erin Weller Dalton; Fundraising & Development Manager Matt Wynalda; Program Manager and Teaching Artist Chelsea Vill, M.S. BC-DMT; Facilities Manager Derry Reed; Production Manager Aubria Battle; Rental Manager Tosin Taiwo; and Operations & Volunteer Coordinator and Teaching Artist Azaria Gadson. One student shared, “I come back each year because I like the connection and the collaboration with the other dancers. It's like family now.”
