On Stage Playhouse, 215 High School Ave, Monroe, GA 30655
About
On Stage Playhouse Youth Theatre Workshops and Camps offers youth workshops, educational workshops, and a Youth Theatre Camp that include live performances and production opportunities. Participants take part in performances that are presented as live theatre events.
The mission of On Stage is to create theater experiences for the community in an accessible and inclusive environment, with a goal to introduce theater arts through educational workshops, performances, and production opportunities while entertaining, inspiring, and engaging audiences. On Stage is Walton County's community theatre, and a portion of the proceeds from each regular season show goes to a local 501c3 charitable, educational, or cultural/historic preservation organization. On Stage organized in 1971 and incorporated in 1974, and shows were held at First Methodist Church and Monroe Elementary until 1975, when the current Playhouse became its home. The building that houses the Playhouse began as the Monroe Primitive Baptist Church completed in 1910, was built with donations of land, money, materials, and labor, and has been used over the years as a studio where etiquette, elocution, history, and literature were taught, as a practice space for the Monroe Girls Corps, and briefly as a coffee house where local teens gathered. The City of Monroe granted On Stage the use of this facility, and the original church bell, which had been removed, moved to Gratis, Georgia, and later brought back to Monroe in battered condition, now rests in front of the playhouse.
