Team Up Mentoring’s mission is to foster generational change for families affected by trauma. The organization describes itself as a local community of educators, case managers, and volunteer mentors working together with students in the context of their families and communities, using trauma-informed care and trauma-informed development programs. It focuses on building resilience in kids and families living in Northeast Georgia and invests in long-term relationships, starting with children as young as 3 years old and continuing support until age 21, including a commitment to walk beside families through high school graduation. Each child and family has a team that can include mentors, teachers, doctors, counselors, parents, and tutors, and the program is present for kids up to three nights a week. All services are offered at no cost and are sustained by sponsors and donors.
Team Up Mentoring began when founder Anna Blount, after completing her Biological Science degree from the University of Georgia in 2006 and volunteering in Monroe, Georgia with a church ministry, started the program and continued for over ten years to research and plan ways to serve vulnerable children and their families. The leadership team includes Anna Blount as Founder and Executive Director, Amy Hunnewell as Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, and Aydee Bailey as Family Life Director. Amy Hunnewell earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Georgia, is an Internationally Certified Prevention Specialist, and has over 18 years of experience in youth development.
The Teen Leadership Academy includes a camp held at a local college that focuses on substance abuse prevention. According to mentors, volunteering at Team Up Mentoring has included experiences such as working with a teen group that is described as loving and eager to learn, mentoring high school boys in math, and serving as a mentor for over six years. Mentors report that training is fast and fun and that the kids make the experience worthwhile.
