Toddle Towne Alton Learning Center, 3839 Humbert Rd., Alton, IL 62002
About
Dynamite Day Camp includes social-emotional learning, hands-on exploration, creative play, and hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities. Campers take part in launching model rockets, cracking secret spy codes, art, storytelling, engineering challenges, nature walks, mindfulness, team-building, and reflective activities. The camp also includes bi-weekly field trips and guest visitors.
• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Full-day summer camp, Monday through Friday, running May 26 through August 14 in a 12-week session
Toddle Towne Learning Center (TTLC), which offers Dynamite Day Camp, was founded in 1967 and is still owned and operated by the same local educators. The program is available at both the Alton and East Alton Toddle Towne locations and is designed for children entering first through fifth grades, with school-age care up to 12 years old. Toddle Towne is open year-round, Monday through Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and offers a wide selection of programs, with nutritious meals and snacks included. The staff includes many teachers who have been with Toddle Towne for more than 20 years, and last year Dynamite Day Camp registration was sold out. The leadership team includes Executive Director Susan Berry, Director Samantha Williams at Toddle Towne East Alton Learning Center, and Director Julie Hawkins at Toddle Towne Alton Learning Center.
Each themed week at Dynamite Day Camp focuses on imaginative, interactive learning with STEAM-focused themes such as Journey into Outer Space, Super Hero Training Academy, Teamwork Makes the Dream Work, Wild West Expansion, and Super Spy School. Daily social-emotional practices, bi-weekly field trips, and guest visitors connect activities with the surrounding community. The camp follows Toddle Towne’s mission that children “PLAY while they LEARN and LEARN while they PLAY,” with an interactive, creative, and well-rounded curriculum that prepares each child for kindergarten and beyond. Families are asked to apply sun block every morning before camp and send a hat with a brim to protect children’s faces from the sun.
Susan Berry, Executive Director of Toddle Towne, states, “Kids thrive when they’re encouraged to explore both their curiosity and their feelings,” and, “We’ve designed our Dynamite Day Camp curriculum to inspire young minds with STEAM while supporting their emotional and social growth, which is just as critical.” The program also shares the quote from Mr. Rogers, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for Children Play is Serious Learning.”
