Programs are intentionally designed by full-time staff with professional credentials such as CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) and/or CPRP (Certified Park and Recreation Professional). FVSRA offers programs and special events for all age groups and ability levels, with an individualized approach that can complement Individual Education Plan and Behavior Support Plan directives from other healthcare providers. Inclusion services may include instructor training, program modifications, adaptive equipment, or additional staff support. SootheSpace is a portable safe space where light, texture and sound create an environment for recentering for Autistic and other Neurodivergent people and adults with Down’s Syndrome. Transportation services are available with pick-up points placed throughout the service region with a goal of a pick-up point within 20 minutes of each resident. The Dr. William “Bill” Kelly Resource Library provides free sensory, tech, and recreation tools for holiday break. Fox Valley Special Recreation Foundation fundraising events such as the BBQ & Basket Raffle benefit Fox Valley Special Recreation programs.
Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA) was formed in 1976, and in 2026 it marks five decades of empowering individuals with disabilities through recreation. For more than 45 years, FVSRA has provided equitable access to leisure and recreation activities for people of all ages and abilities. Fox Valley Special Recreation Foundation (FVSRF) is celebrating 15 years of impact in 2025. FVSRA is an extension of the Batavia, Fox Valley, Geneva, Oswegoland, St. Charles, Sugar Grove Park Districts, and South Elgin Parks & Recreation Department, and collaborates with staff at these Member Agencies to support inclusive experiences when participants enroll in their programs. FVSRA is governed by a Board of Directors made up of representatives from each of the seven Member Agencies. Financial resources come from the Special Recreation Tax levied by the seven Member Agencies, as well as fundraising, donations, and program registration fees. FVSRF supports the mission of FVSRA and provides scholarships to students in FVSRA’s service area who are pursuing a degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
The mission of FVSRA is to empower people with disabilities to participate in therapeutic recreation and leisure activities, which are described as essential to a rich life. FVSRA is recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency, which is the highest designation in parks and recreation. FVSRA and Aurora University received a Partnership Award at the Illinois Association of Park Districts’ Best of the Best Awards Gala, and the two organizations were honored together for their partnership. Programs also offer internship opportunities for students preparing for careers in parks and recreation.
